Single crystals of Sr{sub 1.5}La{sub 1.5}V{sub 2}O{sub 7} (Sr{sub 3}Ti{sub 2}O{sub 7}-type) and Sr{sub 4}V{sub 3}O{sub 9.7} (Sr{sub 4}Ti{sub 3}O{sub 10}-type) have been grown by a melt method in molybdenum crucibles at high temperatures and from a strontium borate flux. Crystal structures have been refined from single crystal X-ray data. The crystals are large enough for resistivity measurements: Sr{sub 4}V{sub 3}O{sub 9.7} is metallic down to 4.2 K, while Sr{sub 1.5}La{sub 1.5}V{sub 2}O{sub 7} is a semiconductor. A possible correlation exists between the observed electrical properties and the degree of distortion in the V-O polyhedra.
