Title: Pilot-test application for ozone/ultraviolet-light reactor for industrial process water. Final report, 23 April 1982-23 April 1983

Technical Report ·
OSTI ID:5559099

This report describes a study to demonstrate on a pilot-plant scale the removal of refractory organic contaminants in an industrial wastewater by ozone in the presence of UV light. This program consisted of (1) selecting an industrial facility which has a wastewater containing refractory organic compounds that prevent the reuse of the water, (2) transporting and installing a UV-ozonation plant at the selected facility, (3) analyzing treated and untreated wastewater samples for the organic contaminants, (4) evaluating pilot plant operating parameters such as wastewater flow rate and ozone dosage, and (5) deriving design data and cost projections for a full-scale UV/O/sub 3/ wastewater treatment plant. The experimental results indicated that, UV-ozonation could not be carried out economically without breaking the emulsion beforehand. Pretreatment of the wastewater with slaked lime gave a nearly complete (less than 98%) UV/O3 oxidation of the contaminants.
