Abstract

We summarize recent measurements by the HRS collaboration of the topological branching fractions, the production cross section, the lifetime, and the rate into electrons of the {tau} lepton. An inconsistency with theoretical expectations persists at the level of two standard deviations. 11 refs., 2 figs., 4 tabs.

This paper reports a new measurement of the branching ratio for the decay {tau}{sup {minus}}{r arrow}{ital e}{sup {minus}}{bar {nu}}{sub {ital e}}{nu}{sub {tau}}. The data were taken with the High Resolution Spectrometer at the SLAC {ital {ital e}}{sup +}{ital e}{sup {minus}} colliding-beam facility PEP, operating at {radical}{ital s}=29 GeV. The result {ital B}({tau}{sup {minus}}{r arrow}{ital e}{sup {minus}}{bar {nu}}{sub {ital e}}{nu}{sub {tau}})=(17.0{plus minus}0.5{plus minus}0.5)%, together with our measurements of the lifetime and the topological branching fractions of the {tau} lepton are compared with theoretical expectations.

Measurement of the kaon content of three-prong [tau] decays

We present branching fraction measurements of three-prong decays of the [tau][sup [minus]] lepton based on data from the TPC/Two-Gamma detector at SLAC PEP. The decays are classified according to the identities of the charged tracks to give simultaneous measurements of [ital B][[tau][sup [minus]][r arrow][nu][sub [tau]] [ital K][sup [minus]][pi][sup +][pi][sup [minus]]]=0.58[sub [minus]0.13][sup +0.15]% and [ital B][[tau][sup [minus]][r arrow][nu][sub [tau]] [ital K][sup [minus]][ital K][sup +][pi][sup [minus]]]=0.15[sub [minus]0.07][sup +0.09]%, and upper limits of [ital B][[tau][sup [minus]][r arrow][nu][sub [tau]][pi][sup [minus]][ital K][sup +][pi][sup [minus]]][lt]0.25%, [ital B][[tau][sup [minus]][r arrow][nu][sub [tau]] [ital K][sup [minus]][pi][sup +][ital K][sup [minus]]][lt]0.09%, and [ital B][[tau][sup [minus]][r arrow][nu][sub [tau]] [ital K][sup [minus]][ital K][supmore »« less

Kaon content of three-prong decays of the tau lepton

We present a series of measurements involving the production of charged kaons in three-prong hadronic decays of the {tau} lepton. The data sample was obtained with the TPC/Two-Gamma detector facility at PEP. We set a limit on the branching fraction BR({tau}{sup {minus}} {yields} {nu}{sub {tau}}K{sup {minus}}K{sup 0}) < 0.26% at the 95% confidence level. The process {tau}{sup {minus}} {yields} {nu}{sub {tau}}K{sup {minus}}K{sup 0} is related via SU(3) to the second-class current decay {tau}{sup {minus}} {yields} {nu}{sub {tau}}{pi}{sup {minus}}{eta}. Review of tau lepton decays

Measurements of the {tau} decay modes are reviewed and compared with the predictions of the Standard Model. While the agreement is generally good, the status of the 1-prong puzzle'' remains controversial and a discrepancy between the measured leptonic branching fractions and the {tau} lifetime persists. Prospects for precision measurements at a Tau-Charm Factory are also reviewed. 20 refs., 2 tabs.
