Measurement of the total cross section for the pion charge-exchange reaction sup 37 Cl(. pi. sup + ,. pi. sup 0 ) sup 37 Ar at energies 280, 335, and 390 MeV
An activation method was used to measure cross sections for charge exchange of pions in chlorine atoms. The yield of argon atoms per inelastic interaction of {pi}{sup {plus minus}} mesons with molecules of hexachloro benzene C{sub 6} Cl{sub 6} was determined directly at 280, 335, and 390 MeV. To evaluate the contribution from the two-step background process ({pi},{ital pX}) and ({ital p},{ital n}), calculations for {pi}{sup {plus minus}} mesons were made by the Monte Carlo method. The results supplement the previously measured values of total cross sections for charge exchange of pions in nuclei with intermediate mass numbers in the vicinity of the minimum of the mass dependence and can be used for design of apparatus with high resolution in {pi}{sup 0} -meson energy to evaluate counting rates at energies above the region of the pion--nucleon P{sub 33} resonance. Measurements of the cross sections for charge exchange of pions in this region of energies have not been made previously.
