Numerical study of flow and heat transfer in liquid lead-bismuth targets in the ISTC project
- Institute of Physics and Power Engineering, Kaluga (Russian Federation); and others
The lead-bismuth eutectic is considered as one of the very few materials acceptable for liquid-metal targets. Its application requires keeping the flow velocity below {approximately}3 m/s and surface temperature below {approximately}450{degrees}C for stainless steel or below {approximately}550{degrees}C for martensitic-ferritic steel. The purpose of this work was the search for an optimal concept of a liquid-metal target and its thermal-hydraulic optimization for an {approximately}1-MW beam source. Additional limitations were imposed by space restrictions (1-m length and 0.2-m diameter), electromagnetic pump yield (43 kg/s), and circuit equipment operating temperature (220 to 330{degrees}C). The thermal-hydraulic optimization included consecutive two- or three-dimensional calculations and design modifications. The results obtained for 20- to 25-MW targets in the ISTC project were used as a starting point.
