The Criticality Safety Information Resource Center (CSIRC) was established at Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL) in 1996. The mission of CSIRC is the preservation of primary documentation supporting criticality safety. Primary source material for criticality safety includes experimentalists` logbooks, notes, drawings, photographs, and material descriptions. Experience has shown that the logbooks and other forms of primary data are vulnerable to being discarded. For example, recent conversations with criticality safety personnel at the Savannah River Site (SRS) indicate that the SRS logbooks may have been lost or misplaced. Destruction of logbooks results in a permanent loss to the criticality safety community. The establishment of CSRIC represents the culmination of at least 8 yr of nationwide {open_quotes}grass roots{close_quotes} efforts to {open_quotes}save the logbooks{close_quotes}.
