Accuracy in short-half-life INAA: Methodology

The use of instrumental neutron activation analysis (INAA) for high-accuracy elemental determinations is well known and has been applied to a wide variety of matrices for many years. This analytical technique has unique quality assurance capabilities, which makes it particularly useful in the analysis and certification of difficult and/or natural matrix certified reference materials. However, when INAA is applied to elements with short-half-life activation products, there are additional concerns that must be considered if high-accuracy results are to be obtained. This paper discusses the INAA methodology necessary to obtain high-accuracy analyses with short-half-life products ({open_quotes}shorts{close_quotes}), with an emphasis on the specific problems that result directly from the short half-lives.
