Mortality and cancer morbidity among cadmium-exposed workers
The cause-specific mortality and incidence of cancer in Swedish battery factory and alloy factory workers was measured, and these data were compared with reference data. The expected number of deaths and cancer incidences was calculated with the ''''life-table'' method. The workers in the battery factory who started work before 1948 had a general increased mortality in the 1950's as a result of respiratory disease. There was no increase in general cancer mortality or in general cancer incidence. In the alloy factory, workers showed increased mortality in prostatic cancer (four cases). These findings support the association between human cadmium exposure and increased risk of prostatic cancer. (4 graphs, 32 references, 2 tables)
