The photooxidation of a number of organic species, representing several classes of atmospheric pollutants, was studied in the presence of HONO, NO, and NO/sub 2/ at parts per million concentrations. The experiments give information on the rate and mechanism of the reaction with organic molecules of HO radicals produced by photolysis of HONO under these conditions. The data allow evaluation of relative rate constants for the reaction of HO with these organic species and the stoichiometry for NO to NO/sub 2/ conversion during the subsequent oxidation steps. The implications of the results for the assessment of the atmospheric reactivity of organic pollutants with respect to photooxidant formation are briefly discussed.
