Double charge exchange of. pi. /sup -/ mesons on nuclei with a change in strangeness

Double charge exchange reactions of ..pi../sup -/ mesons in nuclei with a change in strangeness (..pi../sup -/ ..-->.. K/sup +/), as well as the ..pi../sup -/ ..-->.. ..pi../sup +/K/sup 0/ transitions, have been observed for the first time. A method is suggested for measuring the reaction cross sections without identification of the K/sup +/ mesons. Experimental data indicate that the process, basically, has a two-step nature. Several nucleons of the nucleus (n>2) can participate at once in the direction. The experiment was carried out in the MIFI five-hundred centimeter bubble chamber for P/sub ..pi../=3.9 GeV/sec.
