Title: Valve and dash-pot assembly

Abstract

A value and dash-pot assembly is described comprising: a housing having a valve seat, a valve member pivotally mounted in the housing between a valve open position and a valve closed position engagable against the seat, a dash-pot valve submerged in the fluid within the housing and including a cylinder formed with an end wall having an outlet, and having a reciprocal piston, a plunger attached to the piston and projecting outwardly of the cylinder in the path of closing movement of the valve member, a chamber in the cylinder, means for normally biasing the piston and attached plunger outwardly into an extended position, a fixed plate mounted within the cylinder between the piston and the end wall and provided with fluid passage means which directs fluid tangentially into the chamber for developing a vortex flow in the chamber upon retraction of the piston to effect increasing resistance against the piston and plunger to progressively retard closing movement of the valve member toward the valve seat. The vortex flow with the resistance is not produced upon outward movement of the piston.
