This book presents the papers given at a conference whose purpose was to discuss the existing and potential West Coast ports for the shipping of US coal to the Far East. Topics considered at the conference included Asian demand, how coal is marketed, visualizing a Puget Sound coal terminal, railroads, slurry pipelines, the safety of water transport, air quality impacts of coal terminal operations, an engineering solution to fugitive dust emissions at coal terminals, existing laws, water quality and quantity, the National Environmental Policy Act, the human environment, land uses outside the coastal zone, coastal zone management, shoreline and estuarine management, a biologist's perspective, a construction firm's perspective, environmental/community costs vs. economic benefits, and Canada's Roberts Bank Environmental Review Committee.
