Title: An ecophysiological analysis of the response of trees to oxidant pollution

Abstract

An ecophysiological analysis of plant responses to air pollution stress that can identify the factors that are important in determining the relative susceptibility of various plant species to pollutants is proposed. The process entails the use of dynamic experimentation in which the effects of specific environmental factors are considered, rather than the static methodology commonly used in air pollution studies. The development of the ecophysiological concept is briefly reviewed. The importance of gas exchange and growth rates in determining the effects of pollutants are discussed. The ecophysiological approach can be used to improve land use management practices in urban and suburban areas. (42 references, 1 table)
