Title: Cathode preparation method for molten carbonate fuel cell

Abstract

A method of preparing a cathode structure for use in a fuel cell with a molten carbonate salt electrolyte is described comprising: providing a porous sintered plaque of nickel metal that is substantially free of lithium; oxidizing the nickel metal in the porous plaque substantially free of lithium to form nickel oxide by contact with an oxygen containing gas at a temperature of no more than about 600/sup 0/C to 700/sup 0/C; and subsequently adding to the plaque a limited amount of lithium salt at a temperature of no more than 600/sup 0/-700/sup 0/C to lithiate the nickel oxide tgo a lithium level of about 1-6 atom percent lithium while maintaining the structure integrity of the plaque.
