Title: Tribological properties of Al alloy particle composites

Abstract

An evaluation is made of the tribological properties of particle-dispersed Al alloy matrix composites, which encompass sliding wear, friction, seizure-resistance, and abrasive wear; this last obtains in composites incorporating a solid lubricant as well as the hard ceramic particles. In the case of prospective applications of Al alloy matrix/graphite dispersion composites to internal combustion engine pistons and bearings, the low stress abrasive wear rate of composites containing 20-35 vol pct particle fractions are presently noted to be comparable to those of heat-treated 1045 steel. 36 references.
