Title: Method for reducing water production from a gravel packed well

Abstract

This patent describes a process for reducing water production from a well having a gravel containing gravel pack traversing a production zone, the gravel pack including a perforated tubing extending through the gravel pack, a screen over a perforate section of the tubing; isolating packers above and below the screen, and gravel packing between the screen and perforated casing adjacent- the production zone, the production zone including a lower water-producing interval and an upper hydrocarbon-producing interval. It comprises: placing a bridge plug within the perforate tubing at a position below the hydrocarbon-producing zone; placing a layer of coarse sand on the bridge plug, the coarse sand having an average particle sized greater than the average particle size of the gravel forming the gravel pack; placing a layer of fine sand over the layer of coarse sand, the fine sand having an average particle size smaller than the average particle size of the gravel forming the gravel pack and filling the tubing to a level at or above the top of the water-producing interval; placing a settable liquid resin through the tubing onto the top of the layer of fine sand, whereby the resin flows outwardly from the tubing to formmore » a layer of resin extending from the tubing through the gravel; and allowing the resin to set, thereby forming a barrier to flow of water from the water-producing zone into the tubing.« less

  • This patent describes a method for improving the effectiveness of a gravel pack within an unconsolidated or loosely consolidated hydrocarbonaceous fluid containing formation or reservoir.   • Method for forming a gravel pack in-situ about a horizontal well in a sandy formation. The gravel pack is formed in two separate steps so that part of the pack will function as a foundation for slidably inserting and supporting the well liner. Thereafter, the remainder of the pack is completed about the liner by introducing a gravel slurry that accumulates on the foundation and about the liner.
  • A method is described for reducing the production of water from oil wells by injecting into the wells, a viscous oil containing from 0.01 to 10% by wt of a coupling agent in an amount sufficient the subterranean formations penetrated by the well bore radially for a distance up to about 100 ft. The water reduction results from the reduced water wettability of the formation. The coupling agents are phenolic and furane resins. (8 claims)
  • Methods are described for cleaning and treating gravel packed, gravel developed, and drilled igneous rock wells. The cleaning is effected with a hydrochloric and hydroxy- acetic acid mixture by surging an acid bactericide through the screened end of the well and parts of the aquifer first in one vertical direction and then the other, the bactericide preferably being the acid mixture. The cleaning is followed with a copper-sulfate wetting agent mixture to retard the growth of iron bacteria. (10 claims)
