Pipeline voltage hazards on high voltage AC transmission line right-of-way

Ontario Hydro shows that pipelines on power-line rights-of-way can play a significant part in the conduction of fault return currents. The voltage hazards near a pipeline are illustrated for power-system faults occurring within power stations and those occurring along the transmission lines. Metal pipelines buried along power lines and not directly connected to the tower grounding system can also play a considerable role in the conduction of ground currents. Staged fault tests and model studies are discussed to demonstrate the hazardous voltages involved.
