Title: An application of a pseudo-second order SO/sub 2/ reaction algorithm to urban air pollution modeling

Abstract

The validity of using a pseudo-second-order sulfur dioxide oxidation algorithm for emissions from point sources in a short-term air quality model is examined, and results are compared with data from total sulfur distribution measurements taken in Houston. The model's implementation is discussed. Results from a first-order oxidation algorithm and the second order oxidation algorithm are compared. The use of a second-order SO2 algorithm was found to improve the ability of the short-term air quality model to predict the spatial distribution of observed sulfur concentrations when the major sources of SO2 are tall stacks. A first-order oxidation decay model could not be utilized to predict observed sulfur particulate distributions in the Houston area. (9 graphs, 27 references, 3 tables)
