The interest in actinide migration in natural systems has prompted us to study actinides and polyoxometalates as possible models for actinide-clay interactions. The polyoxometalates being used are K{sub 10}{alpha}{sub 2}-P{sub 2}W{sub 17}O{sub 61}{circ}xH{sub 2}O and K{sub 28}Li{sub 5}H{sub 71}P{sub 8}W{sub 48}O{sub 184}{circ}xH{sub 2}O. The P{sub 2}W{sub 17}{sup 10-} and P{sub 8}W{sub 48}{sup 40-} anions are of interest due to their high anionic charges and their relative stabilities in a broad pH range (pH=2-6 and pH=1-8, respectively). The fluorescence emission and lifetime spectra for the UO{sub 2}{sup 2+}/P{sub 8}W{sub 48}{sup 40-} system as well as other complexation studies using cyclic voltametry. Raman spectroscopy, and {sup 31}P and {sup 183}W NMR data will be discussed.
