Modelling of drying and pyrolysis during underground coal gasification. Part 2. Comparison with experimental data

A finite difference algorithm is presented for solving the one-dimensional 'Stefan problem' posed by drying and pyrolysis of a coal block. Extension of the algorithm to the problem of drying, pyrolysis and gasification of a coal block gives excellent agreement with data obtained by Oak Ridge National Laboratories. These data include temperature profiles and location of the drying front. Reasonable agreement with the gaseous product distribution is also obtained.
