Drell-Yan process and the pion sea in the nucleon
A model in which the quark sea of the nucleon at large distances is due to peripheral fluctuations with pion emission is discussed. The results are expressed in terms of the probability w/sub pi/N/(x/sub ..pi../) of emission by the nucleon of a pion with a momentum fraction x/sub ..pi../ which is calculated in the model of pion exchange. The distributions of u-bar and d-bar quarks in the nucleon are calculated, and the results are in good agreement with the experimental data. The overlap factor is determined for various diagrams of pion exchange in terms of the quark distributions. The experimental data on production of lepton pairs in NN collisions are described using the data on pair production in ..pi..N collisions.
