Title: Effect of fracture modes on shape and size of coal particles and separation of phases

Journal Article · · Prepr. Pap., Am. Chem. Soc., Div. Fuel Chem.; (United States)

Microscopy, shape, size and sulfur analyses are used to show the influence of fracture modes and mechanisms on shape and size of coal particles and separation of phases. During the grinding, the modes and mechanisms of fracture change with time and particle size. Fracture tends to proceed preferentially first along organic-to-organic interfaces, then along organic-to-mineral interfaces and crack and pores. Also, phases that are lean in organic sulfur are found to concentrate in finer particles, and organic sulfur rich phases in coarser particles.
