Laser beam focusing using dielectric-channel waveguides
Two focusing devices are described that contain optical focusing elements and sections of dielectric-channel waveguide. The devices perform simultaneously the function of beam transport over significant distance. They are distinguished by simplicity of fabrication (especially when applied to the long-wavelength range of the IR region), high quality of the focal spot, and low energy losses. One of them gives a focal spot in which the intensity distribution is the square of the modulus of the Fourier transform of the field distribution of the incident beam. The shape and size of the focal spot in the second device is independent of the incident beam. A computer algorithm for the principal characteristics of the devices proposed is developed and verified experimentally.
