The chemistry, gasification, and hydrolysis of wood are first discussed briefly. Chemical wood pulping, and organosolv pulping in particular, can process wood into a variety of chemical by-products. The uses of the by-products are cited, and these could substitute for 1.4 quads of equivalent petrochemical raw materials. 22 refs.
