The number of steam generator gas path retrofit projects is increasing dramatically as utilities strive to meet air quality control (AQC) requirements. A unique approach of meeting these requirements utilizes the existing precipitators, breeching, and ID fans operating at reduced flow with a new precipitator and one ID fan added in parallel to handle the remaining gas flow. This paper presents the design considerations necessary to operate with three ID fans in parallel legs with unequal flows and pressure drops. It also addresses the sizing of the new ID fan, furnace draft control system design, fan tripping schemes and economic considerations. 3 refs.
