Space reactors. Progress report, July-September 1981
Abstract
Progress in technology development for the Space Power Advanced Reactor (SPAR) project is reported for the period July 1-September 30, 1981. The weights of neutron and gamma shields required to protect the SPAR system payloads for a range of permissible exposures have been determined, and initial results are reported. SPAR reactor safety in the case of water immersion has been modeled. Approval-in-Principle has been received for the SPAR fuel test in the Experimental Breeder Reactor-II (EBR-II); the heat pipe developed for this test is performing well. SPAR system design variations are being examined under the possibility of using long core heat pipes. Testing of the initial molybdenum/sodium artery heat pipe continued, with ambiguous results. Fabrication of the first all-bonded thermoelectric units has been completed and testing has been initiated.

Flow-Induced Vibration for Light Water Reactors (FIV for LWRs) is a program designed to improve the FIV performance of light water reactors through the development of design criteria, analytical models for predicting behavior of components, and general scaling laws to improve the accuracy of reduced-scale tests, and through the identification of high FIV risk areas. This report summarizes the work carried out at the University of Pittsburgh for the multiphase flow process laboratory supported by Gulf Research and Development Company. The goal of this research is to provide a basis for determining the optimum conditions (target species and thickness) for producing D/sup -/ beams by the double capture technique. High production efficiency and low angular divergence are desired. The effort has two components: a modeling effort to determine the D/sup -/ yield and angular scattering as a function of target thickness, and an experimental effort to measure the angular differential cross sections that are required as input data in the model. The prosecution of the technical aspects of the Statement of Work leading to the engineering design and assessment of a 50,000-bpd coal-to-methanol-to-gasoline plant proceeded at an accelerated pace. The procurement of data for proprietary processes other than the mandated Texaco Coal Gasification Process (TCGP) and Mobil Methanol-to-Gasoline (MTG) Process was advanced by fixing the process design operating conditions of the TCGP, thereby allowing specification of downstream processing unit requirements. Scale-up correlations have been developed from the data gathered during this quarter. Data from two validated test periods together with three previousl validated runs have yielded equations which allow good correlation (mostly within +- 3% and all with +- 10%) for the following key parameters: (a) coal carbon gasified in stage 2, (b) coal carbon converted to methane in stage 2, (c) coal carbon converted to carbon oxides in stage 2.
