Effect of flow maldistribution on the thermal response of packed-bed converters and thermal-energy storage units

A two-dimensional model was developed to predict the flow field and temperature profiles in a packed bed during transient operation. The flow field was computed using the continuity equation and the vectorial form of the Ergun equation. Energy equations which consider the effects of axial and transverse heat conduction in both the solid and gas phases were used to calculate the temperature profiles in the bed. 24 refs.
