Abstract

Wavelength multiplexing techniques provide the basis for many efficient image transmission schemes using optical fibers. A variety of examples is presented and important system characteristics and tradeoffs are considered.

Two-dimensional image transmission through optical fibers by wavelength multiplexing

The number of data points transmitted by an optical waveguide can be greatly increased by assigning one narrow wavelength region to each data point. The technique, called wavelength or spectral multiplexing, allows hundreds of data points to be transmitted simultaneously over a few fibers. This paper outlines the concept of a two-dimensional-grating multiplexer (and demultiplexer) and includes factors governing the design, test techniques, and experimental results derived after constructing such a system. This experimental system simultaneously transmits and reconstructs 5 x 10/sup 3/ high quality data points from a two-dimensional object through 50 fibers in a linear array. Imaging techniques utilizing optical fibers and tomography

Two-dimensional, time-dependent images generated by neutrons, gamma rays, and x-rays incident on fast scintillators are relayed to streak and video cameras over optical fibers. Three dimensions, two spatial and one temporal, have been reduced to two, one in space and time utilizing sampling methods permitting reconstruction of a time-dependent, two-dimensional image subsequent to data recording. The manner in which the sampling is done optimized the ability to reconstruct the image via a maximization of entropy algorithm. Due to the growth in the use of analog fiber optic data transmission systems at the Nevada Test Site and other locations, Sandia National Laboratories (SNL) has recognized the need to be able to multiplex several data channels per fiber. Wavelength-division, frequency-division, and time-division multiplex techniques have been investigated. A time-division system using optically-multiplexed laser transmitters driving a common receiver was fielded on the HUNTERS TROPHY event at the NTS. Stability, noise, and dynamic range compared favorably with that seen on nonmultiplexed links. Fiber-optic wavelength-division multiplexing and demultiplexing using volume holographic gratings

We present theoretical and experimental results of a novel fiber-optic wavelength-division multiplexing (WDM) design employing a broadband (>150-nm) dichromated gelatin volume holographic grating operating in a reflective Littrow configuration with on-axis optics, a single lens, and one fiber array. This configuration can achieve better than {minus}1.5-dB insertion loss and {minus}40-dB cross talk for a 6-channel system and {minus}2.5-dB insertion loss and {minus}20-dB cross talk for a 12-channel system with 15-nm channel spacing.
