In a device for the production of electrical energy by electrochemical methods, which device contains an electrolyte and a membrane separating two electrolyte solutions, this patent describes the improvement wherein the membrane is an oxidative resistant, conductive, ion-selective membrane comprising a catenated aromatic polymer having an absence of tertiary hydrogens.
