Title: Effect of Y/sub 2/O/sub 3/ and Nd/sub 2/O/sub 3/ doping on the structure and stability of ZrO/sub 2/-based phases in alloys of the system Al/sub 2/O/sub 3/-ZrO/sub 2/

Additions of 12 mass % Y/sub 2/O/sub 3/ or 30 mass % yttrium concentrate (with respect to ZrO/sub 2/) to the charge with the composition 75 mass % Al/sub 2/O/sub 3/ + 25 mass % ZrO/sub 2/ make it possible to obtain stabilized ZrO/sub 2/ in samples obtained by melting. When 30 mass % Nd/sub 2/O/sub 3/ is introduced 60% stabilized ZrO/sub 2/ is formed. The stabilized phase has the ..beta..-ZrO/sub 2/ structure with additions of not more than 12 mass % Y/sub 2/O/sub 3/, and the structure characteristic for ..gamma..-ZrO/sub 2/(F) with 15 mass % Y/sub 2/O/sub 3/. In the case of 10-30 mass % Nd/sub 2/O/sub 3/ or 15-30 mass % yttrium concentrate the stabilized ZrO/sub 2/ is a mixture of the disordered solid solution with a structure close to that of ..gamma..-ZrO/sub 2/(F) and an ordered solid solution with the structure of pyrochlore ..gamma..-ZrO/sub 2/(P).
