Title: New series of derivative oxides of the structure. cap alpha. -U/sub 3/O/sub 8/: M/sup II/UMo/sub 4/O/sub 16/

Abstract

A new family of isotypical oxides M/sup II/UMo/sub 4/O/sub 16/ (M/sup II/ = Mg, Mn, Cd, Ca, Hg, Sr, Pb) is identified. The structure of the compound with Ca was determined by x-ray diffraction. It is triclinic, space group P anti 1 with a = 13.239(5) A, b = 6.651(2) A, c = 8.236(3) A, ..cap alpha.. = 90/sup 0/00(4), ..beta.. = 90/sup 0/38(4), ..gamma.. = 120/sup 0/16(3), Z = 2. The final index and the weighted R/sub w/ index are 0.049 and 0.040, respectively. The cell is related to the orthorhombic one of ..cap alpha..-U/sub 3/O/sub 8/: a = 2a/sub 0/, b = -(a/sub 0/ + b/sub 0/)/2, c = 2c/sub 0/. The structure, reminiscent of that of ..cap alpha..-U/sub 3/O/sub 8/, consists of chains of (Ca, U)O/sub 7/ pentagonal bipyramids and MoO/sub 6/ octahedra, running parallel to the c axis. The U-O distances along the U-O-Ca-O chains are shortened to 1.77(1) A. The uranyl ion was characterized by its IR spectrum.
