Title: Argon flash candle. Quarterly report, April--June 1964

Abstract

Several additional argon flash candles have been fired during the quarter. Several shots both straight-in and at 45{degrees} with and without the prism were fired. Some interesting data were obtained from pseudo-spectrograph shots performed by interposing filters in the light path of the camera and using both glass and Plexiglas simultaneously on the candle front. From these shots, we were able to better illustrate some of the differences in glass and Plexiglas with regard to diffusion and light scattering, as well as spectral transmission characteristics.

  • This project has as its purpose the evaluation of argon flash candle components and factors which affect candle light output. This will be done by measuring the intensity of the light output simultaneously as a function of wave length and time.
  • The planned subbituminous coal pyrolysis baseline runs were completed. Material balance data for the three runs were compiled and are reported here. Mass and elemental balance closures were good. Yield distributions among the three runs were in good agreement. Compared to the bench-scale pyrolysis results reported earlier, lower tar and higher gas yields were obtained during the PDU baseline runs with subbituminous coal. Further PDU and bench-scale tests are being made to investigate these differences. Pyrolysis of bituminous coal was begun with the near-term objective of determining reactor performance over a wide range of operating conditions. Satisfactory performance at ratesmore » up to 100 lb/hr and at temperatures as low as 1200/sup 0/F was achieved in initial tests of up to 9 hours duration. There was no evidence of reactor fouling as confirmed by visual inspection after planned shutdown. Tests at rates of up to 200 lb/hr or temperature of about 1000/sup 0/F showed susceptibility to fouling due to erratic flow of hot char to the reactor. Work to reduce char rate fluctuations is continuing. Autoclave testing of commercially available catalysts was completed and an alumina supported Ni-Mo catalyst was chosen for pyrolysis tar hydrotreating studies. Operation of the continuous hydrotreater continued with the successful execution of a 40 hour material balance run processing tar produced in the PDU. The preliminary data indicate that ''Flash Pyrolysis'' tar can be hydrorefined using commercially available petroleum catalysts. High conversion of preasphaltenes and asphaltenes to oils and sulfur removal are obtainable under moderate severity. Nitrogen removal requires higher severity. Interpretation of the significance of these results is subject to performance data at greater catalyst age.« less
  • Sieve analyses of several samples of HMX received from LRL were performed again because of the spread ({approx} 5% to 8%) in some of the initial results below the 10{mu} point. In general, the samples had the same distribution as reported in the fourth quarterly report of 1963, but the scatter in the <10{mu} region was less. HMX used in LX-04-1 production lots (4A and B 64, 5A and B 64 and 6A and B 64). The abrupt {open_quotes}dip{close_quotes} in the particle distribution curve at 8{mu} was investigated. The {open_quotes}large sieve{close_quotes} elutant was thought to have been the cause, ormore » at least affected it. All all-sieve series was run using the usual <10{mu} elutant (Freon BF with 10% isobutyl acetate) rather than the HMX saturated isobutyl acetate normally used as the elutant from 350{mu} to 10{mu}. The results from three samples of HMX so sieved were not significantly different from the samples sieved by the standard procedure. A procedure for sieving PETN using the same range of sieves as with HMX has been included. This is essentially the same as the procedure for HMX except for a change in elutant system.« less
