Developments in understanding the mechanisms of stress-corrosion cracking (SCC) of high-strength aluminum alloys are highlighted from early dissolution models, to present hydrogen embrittlement dominated theories. Uncertainties in the present view of the SCC mechanism are identified. The means by which SCC susceptibility has been reduced in ingot metallurgy (I/M) alloys are described. The susceptibility of new powder metallurgy (P/M) alloys 7090, 7091, IN 9052 and Al-Li I/M alloys is assessed and compared with that of conventional I/M alloys. Means by which understanding the SCC mechanism can be used to decrease SCC susceptibility are proposed.
