Title: Fracture toughness enhancement of Ni/{alpha}-Al{sub 2}O{sub 3} composites via the addition of chromium oxide

Conference ·
OSTI ID:530696

Previous work has focused on the sol-gel synthesis of Ni/{alpha}-Al{sub 2}O{sub 3} metal-ceramic composites for use in high temperature, structural applications. Despite displaying some fracture toughness enhancement relative to pure alumina, these composites still lack the level of toughness required for structural use. However, theory suggests that the addition of chromium oxide to form an alumina/chromia solid solution as the ceramic phase might enhance their fracture behavior. The proposed source of this mechanical enhancement is a strengthening of the metal-ceramic interface via electron transfer. This paper evaluates the effects of chromia addition on the mechanical properties of Ni/{alpha}-Al{sub 2}O{sub 3} metal-ceramic composites produced by sol-gel. The mechanical properties investigated include the elastic constants, microindentation hardness, and fracture toughness.
