Title: Power spiral conveyor section and method

Abstract

This patent describes a method of mining a mine having a mine mouth, using a mining head with a spiral conveyor including a spiral conveyor screw rotatable with a shaft about an axis of rotation. It comprises: inserting the mining head in the mine through the mine mouth, and advancing the head into the mine mouth; continuously conveying mined material from the mine toward the mine mouth using the spiral conveyor; adding incremental lengths to the spiral conveyor screw as the distance from the mining head to the mouth increases; periodically providing power assists for effecting powered rotating of the spiral conveyor about its axis of rotation along the length of the spiral conveyor about its axis of rotation along the length of the spiral conveyor in the mine as the incremental lengths are added.

  • A guide assembly for a curved conveyor section of a scraperchain conveyor guides the scraper assembly from a first straight conveyor portion round the curved conveyor section to a second straight conveyor portion. This guiding is accomplished by a pair of independently rotatable pulley wheels. A further pair of independently rotatable pulley wheels are provided to guide the drive chain of a plough round the curved conveyor section. This enables the plough to be driven to and fro along the first straight conveyor portion by a drive station attached to the second straight conveyor portion adjacent to the guide assembly.
  • A nuclear method and apparatus determines the temperature of a medium by injecting fast neutrons into the medium and detecting returning slow neutrons in three first energy ranges by producing three respective detection signals. The detection signals are combined to produce three derived indicia each systematically related to the population of slow neutrons returning from the medium in a respective one of three second energy ranges, specifically exclusively epithermal neutrons, exclusively substantially all thermal neutrons and exclusively a portion of the thermal neutron spectrum. The derived indicia are compared with calibration indicia similarly systematically related to the population of slowmore » neutrons in the same three second energy ranges returning from similarly irradiated calibration media for which the relationships temperature, neutron absorption cross section and neutron moderating power to such calibration indicia are known. The comparison indicates the temperature at which the calibration indicia correspond to the derived indicia and consequently the temperature of the medium. The neutron absorption cross section and moderating power of the medium can be identified at the same time.« less

  • An articulated ancillary support for a conveyor is attached onto the forward side of a mine roof chock by extensible means which, when retracted towards the chock, shifts the ancillary support from a normal condition in which it occupies an area of relatively wide lateral extent to another condition in which it overlies an area of relatively narrow lateral extent, freeing a large portion of the space under the chocks to clear the way for a retreating continuous miner.
