Abstract

Findings regarding the technical, economic, environmental, and commercial prospects for processing wood wastes and peat into high grade solid fuels using the Koppelman Process are presented. Representative sites in Millinocket and Jonesport, Maine were selected as a basis for the development of site specific design, performance, environmental, and economic information. The design basis, site considerations, wood waste process plant, peat processing plant, permitting considerations, management plan for commercial facility, and resource assessment are included. The Koppelman process for irreversible drying and upgrading of low value fuels has been applied to peat from various sources. The paper describes an adaptation of the Koppelman process in which peat is hydraulically mined and pipelined as a slurry to a plant where it is converted to a high quality solid fuel, designated as K-Fuel. Technical Report

The results of a preliminary process design and economic study of a 25 MM US gallons per year fuel grade anhydrous ethanol plant and an associated wood fired cogeneration facility are presented. The process was based on the use of No. 2 US yellow corn as the feedstock and pelletized wood as the fuel for generating plant steam requirements. In addition to producing the rated alcohol output, distillers dried grains and carbon dioxide will be recovered as by-products of the process. The purpose of this study is to evaluate the engineering, economic, and environmental feasibility of a fludizied-bed wood gasification facility. The gasification plant would consume 264,000 tons per year of wood wastes that are generated by the Potlatch wood processing facility in Warren, Arkansas. Process steam and electric power would be produced by the gasification plant and used to run the existing Potlatch facility. In September, 1980, the US Department of Energy (DOE) awarded a Grant (No. DE-FG01-80RA50348) to the Minnesota Gas Company (Minnegasco) to evaluate the commercial viability - technical, economic and environmental - of producing 80 million standard cubic feet per day (SCFD) of substitute natural gas (SNG) from peat. Comparison of radiative forcing impacts of the use of wood, peat, and fossil fuels

The present study investigates the greenhouse impacts and the relevant time factors of the use of peat and wood for energy production and compares them with those of fossil fuels. Emissions and sinks of the whole energy production chain and subsequent use of the wood or peat production site are taken into account. The radiative forcing caused by energy production is used as a measure for the greenhouse impact. Economical considerations are not included.
