Title: Levels in /sub 38//sup 80/Sr, /sub 39//sup 83/Y and /sub 40//sup 83/Zr and the new region of strong deformation around N=Z approx 38

Abstract

The energy levels in /sup 83//sub 39/Y and /sup 83//sub 40/Z are identified and investigated along with /sup 80/Sr via in-beam {gamma}-ray spectroscopy to explore the new region of strong deformation centered around N = Z = 38. The reaction /sup 51/V(/sup 32/S,rho2n)/sup 80/Sr was studied at the Holifield Heavy Ion Research Facility and reactions /sup 54/Fe(/sup 32/S,{alpha}2rho)/sup 80/Sr; /sup 54/Fe(/sup 32/S,3rho)/sup 83/Y and /sup 54/Fe(/sup 32/S,2rhon)/sup 83/Zr at the Max Planck Tandem. The deformation in the ground state band in /sup 80/Sr observed to 12/sup +/ shows a significant increase as N decreases toward 38. A 9/2/sup +/ ground state band in /sup 83//sub 39/Y observed to (29/2/sup +/) exhibits larger deformation than an excited (9/2/sup +/) band in /sup 83//sub 40/Zr, as expected as Z moves away from 38. These nuclei support the proposal that the large deformation observed in this region arises from the reinforcing of the proton and neutron shape driving force as both N and Z approach shell gaps at large deformation for N and Z of 38.
