The purpose of this paper is to discuss the main features of the leading options for hydrogen storage and to deliver a basic framework for technoeconomic comparisons. From the utilization point of view, several major areas of hydrogen storage (e.g., for large-scale stationary storage, transient storage, onboard storage for vehicular applications) must be considered separately. In each area, more than one storage option (gaseous, liquid, absorbed, or absorbed in solid materials) may be economically beneficial. Typical areas of beneficial use and restrictive features will be shown for each of the different storage options.
