This article presents methods and criteria for evaluating skin dose from distributed contamination and hot particles. A modified, 1-cm{sub 2} contamination detector can be used to obtain field measurements for the portion of skin that is exposed to the greatest activity, and a generic dose factor can be used to convert these measurements into dose rate and dose. Thresholds (action levels) are presented and explained for initiating skin dose calculations, performing follow-up investigations, and capturing contamination for laboratory analysis.
