Dose-dependence of Pb-ion implantation damage in zirconolite, hollandite, and zircon
Damage from Pb-ion implantation in zircon, zirconolite, and (Ba,Ti)-hollandite occurs in three stages with increasing dose. Doses beyond the third stage render these materials Transmission Electron Microscopy (TEM) amorphous (metamict). The dose-dependence of the three stages in these materials has been determined. TEM of ..cap alpha..-damaged zircons and zirconolites indicates that the damage sequence and dose-dependence is similar to those for Pb implantation. Thus it is concluded that Pb-ion implantation is a valid technique for simulating the structural effects of ..cap alpha..-recoil damage in these materials. This provides reasonable confidence for using the technique for accelerated radiation-aging of waste forms for further post-irradiation experiments.
