Title: HNbO/sub 3/ and HTaO/sub 3/: new cubic perovskites prepared from LiNbO/sub 3/ and LiTaO/sub 3/ via ion exchange

Journal Article · · J. Solid State Chem.; (United States)

The synthesis of HNbO/sub 3/ and HTaO/sub 3/ from LiNbO/sub 3/ via ion exchange in hot aqueous acid solutions is reported. This reaction is accompanied by a topotactic structural transformation from the rhombohedral LiNbO/sub 3/ structure to the cubic perovskite structure; cell constants are a = 3.822(1) angstrom for HNbO/sub 3/ and 3.810(2) angstrom for HTaO/sub 3/. These new compounds have been characterized by powder X-ray diffraction, thermogravimetric analysis, and solid-state NMR. They are electronic insulators and have low ionic conductivity. Evidence of partially proton-exchange phases Li/sub 1-x/H/sub x/MO/sub 3/ was also seen. The possible significance of this ion exchange reaction for devices using LiNbO/sub 3/ or LiTaO/sub 3/ is discussed.
