The reaction of sodium 2-bromobenzoate with aqueous ammonia in the presence of cupric acetylacetonate and bis(ethylacetoacetate) is first-order relative to the bromobenozate and catalyst. The reaction with cupric bis(ethylacetoacetate) is zero-order relative to ammonia, while a negative fractional order relative to ammonia is found for cupric acetylacetonate. A mechanism was examined which entails the formation of a substrate-catalyst complex and the reaction products and the parallel formation of a catalytically inactive catalyst-ammonia complex. The cupric acetylacetonate-ammonia was studied spectrophotometrically.
