Title: Video borehole depth measuring system

Abstract

A method is described of determining penetration of a drill string into the earth utilizing an element of a drilling rig, comprising: providing a target on the element of the drill rig; positioning a video camera at a remote location relative to the drill rig placing the video camera within a waterproof housing at the remote location; directing the video camera at the target; and tracking the movement of the target with the drill string into the earth.

  • A high resolution method and apparatus for measuring the depth of a tool suspended from a cable inside a borehole are described. The tool includes accelerometers for measuring its acceleration and this measurement is combined with a cable depth measurement with which the amount of cable in the borehole is determined. A Kalman filter is employed to continually provide estimates of the velocity and depth of the tool from the accelerometer and cable depth measurements. A filter modifier alters operation of the filter during discontinuous motions of the tool such as when it is stuck and slips. A tool stickingmore » detector senses when the tool is stuck and for how long to correspondingly modify the filter by forcing it to more strongly rely upon accelerometer measurements when the tool is stuck and gradually return to normal filter operation when the tool resumes movement after having been stuck.« less
  • A borehole gravimetry system is described which consists of: (a) a logging cable, (b) a borehole gravity meter affixed to the cable, (c) a first pressure transducer affixed to the logging cable and isolated from the fluid within the borehole, (d) a second pressure transducer affixed to the logging cable in spaced relation to the first pressure transducer and in contact with the borehole fluid so as to be exposed to both the pressure and temperature of the fluid, whereby the thermal time constant of the second pressure transducer is shorter that that of the first pressure transducer, (e) meansmore » for installing the second pressure transducer from the borehole temperature to increase its thermal time constant and decrease the thermal stabilization time with respect to the first pressure transducer, and (f) means for moving the logging cable through the borehole and stopping at successive measurement locations within the borehole to permit the taking of gravity and borehole fluid pressure measurements.« less
  • This patent describes a method for storing depths during well logging operations. It comprises providing electrical pulses corresponding to a well logging apparatus' vertical position; converting the electrical pulses into digital signals of a predetermined format; storing the digital signals and an azimuthal synchronizing pulse corresponding to a predetermined angular position of a transducer of the well logging apparatus on a recording device after a predetermined time-delay following occurrence of the azimuthal synchronizing pulse.
