Title: Cycling of transuranic radionuclides in the Columbia River, its Estuary, and the Northeast Pacific Ocean. Progress report, February 1981-December 1981

Abstract

Progress from February, 1981 through December, 1981 in research dealing with the behavior of transuranic and other radionuclides in the Columbia River downstream from the Hanford Reservation is summarized. All of the objectives outlined in last year's renewal proposal except one were met. The analyses of all cores raised from the Columbia River between McNary Reservoir and the mouth of the river were completed. This permits the establishment of a budget for Pu and Am. Analyses of four natural matrix standard reference materials for the National Bureau of Standards were also performed.

  • This report summarizes progress from February 1980 through January 1981 in research dealing with the behavior of transuranic and other radionuclides in the Columbia River downstream of the Hanford Reservation. Principal efforts during this period have dealt with finalizing the analyses of Columbia River cores for transuranic and other radionuclides, completion of the analyses of offshore cores and the acquistion of mass spectrometry data for Pu isolated from Columbia River sediments. We have, in addition, completed the analyses of cores from anoxic basins to test the theory of anionic complexone remobilization of transuranic radionuclides.
  • This report summarizes progress from February 1979 through January 1980 on the measurement of radionuclides in the Columbia River and its estuary, with principal emphasis on transuranic radionuclides. Accomplishments and pertinent findings of the 3 year interval are summarized and future directions for the research are presented. The first part of the report will draw on information contained in the previous two submissions as well as results from this contract year. This will hopefully present a synoptic view for outside reviewers and the Department of Energy.
  • This report summarizes progress from 1 January 1983 through 31 December 1983 in research dealing with the behavior of transuranic and other radionuclides in the Columbia River downstream from the Hanford Reservation and in the northeast Pacific Ocean. The work summarized includes: (1) a comparison of the mass-spectrometric determination of Pu in biological samples between Savannah River and Battelle-Northwest; (2) the collection of biological samples from the Columbia River between Bonneville Dam and Ice Harbor Dam on the Snake River; (3) preparation of a manuscript detailing the sedimentation regimes in the lower Columbia River and the Columbia River Estuary; (4)more » preparation of a manuscript summarizing results to date on the inventories, sources and geochemical behavior of transuranic and other radionuclides in the lower Columbia River; (3) completion of measurements of McNary Reservoir cores for /sup 152/Eu and /sup 154/Eu; and (6) completion of initial measurements of selected McNary Reservoir sediments to confirm the presence of Ni-63.« less
  • This report summarizes progress from 1 January 1984 to 31 December 1984 in research dealing with the behavior of transuranic and other long-lived radionuclides in the Columbia River downstream from the Hanford Reservation and in the northeast Pacific Ocean. Goals achieved include: The analysis of thirteen continental slope cores for /sup 137/Cs, /sup 239, 240/Pu and /sup 241/Am is complete; while /sup 210/Pb, C, and P analyses continue. The analysis of composite river sediment samples for /sup 63/Ni inventory in lower river reaches was done. Mass spectrometry analysis of fish, mussels, and plankton determined the isotopic composition of plutonium duringmore » 1962 to 1980. A new standard reference material was analyzed in collaboration with the National Bureau of Standards for /sup 137/Cs, /sup 239, 240/Pu, /sup 234, 238/U, thorium isotopes, /sup 210/Pb and /sup 241/Am as well as mass spectrometry analyses on the Pu fraction separated from this sample. Participation in a blind intercalibration exercise was sponsored by the IAEA for the measurement of radionuclides and trace metals in a North Sea marine sediment. A seminar presentation reviewed technetium behavior in the marine ecosystem. (PSB)« less
