The Hamilton-Wentworth Region of Ontario assumed the duties of solid waste disposal in 1974, inheriting ten landfill sites and the Solid Waste Reduction Unit (SWARU) incinerator. Basic initial plant proceses included: automated remotely operated vehicle traffic control systems; raw refuse storage and conveying; refuse pulverization; ferrous metal recovery; semi-suspension burning in water-walled boilers; and electrostatic precipitators for control of air emissions. End products of the process are saleable ferrous scrap and a terile ash comprising less than 5% of the original volume of refuse. Unique features and economics of the system are described.
