Optical indices of the vitrinites of brown coals

On the basis of an investigation of 46 samples of brown coals of the Eastern regions of the country, an interrelationship has been established between the reflectances measured in air and in immersion. The indices of the refraction and absorption of light have been calculated. A rise in the light absorption index with a decrease in the stage of metamorphism of the coals has been found. The relation obtained permits the refractive index of the vitrinite to be determined from its reflectance in immersion.
