Activities for 1979 in the following areas are very briefly summarized: dileptonic processes (hadron-hadron collisions, photon-photon collisions, leading log approximation), ladder approximations in QCD, quark models (clustering, the recombination model), weak interaction phenomenology, nonleptonic decays, grand unification, neutrino pairing, polarization phenomena (general theory, polarization studies of the deuteron, lambda polarization), deuteron targets, and electron beams. Quark--parton model with large parton k/sub T/

The quark--parton model is generalized to allow for arbitrarily large parton k/sub T/. Since it is expected that < k/sub T/ > will rise with Q/sup 2/ in (highly virtual) photon mediated processes, this generalization is necessary to restore the applicability of the quark-parton model. By treating k/sub T/ as an essential kinematical variable, the introduction of a new scaling variable z is considered. Together with Bjorken's x variable, a unified kinematical description is given of the four distribution functions: hadron structure functions and jet decay functions for spacelike and timelike photons. New approach to lepton pair production. [Thermal parton model]

Arguments are first presented to suggest that perturbative QCD calculations cannot account for the average transverse momentum of the dileptons observed in hadronic collisions at present energies. Regarding the complication as being due to the many gluon interactions in the initial state, a thermal parton model is considered which is a combination of the thermodynamical model and the usual parton model. With practically no free parameter the observed features of can be reproduced with the correct dependences on the incident energy and the mass and rapidity of the dileptons.
