Rare earth sulfides R/sub 2/S/sub 3-x/(R = Sc, Er and Lu) as high temperature thermoelectric elements

Rare earth sesquisulfides, Sc/sub 2/S/sub 3-x/, Er/sub 2/S/sub 3-x/ and Lu/sub 2/S/sub 3-x/ were studied with respect to their thermoelectric power and electrical resistivity. All sulfides were shown to be n-type conductors: Sc/sub 2/S/sub 3-x/ (..cap alpha.. = -170..mu..v//sup 0/C, p = 3.56 x 10/sup -3/ OMEGA.cm), Er/sub 2/S/sub 3-x/ (..cap alpha.. = 530..mu..v//sup 0/C, p = 312 OMEGA.cm) and Lu/sub 2/S/sub 3-x/(..cap alpha..= 41..mu..v//sup 0/C, p = 50.6 OMEGA.cm) at 500/sup 0/C.
