Analysis of designs for coal conversion pressure vessels - 1. Preliminary design and analysis - 2. Advanced design and analysis -3. Summary of activities, 1980
Preliminary results of a comprehensive study of alternative structural designs for large pressure vessels for use in processes for gasification and liquefaction of coal are presented in 3 parts. Part I, ''Preliminary Design and Analysis'' gives structural classification of pressure vessels and the various types of construction are described. In particular, single-wall, layered, prestressed, band reinforced, filament wound, girth ringed, and fluid layered pressure vessels are described in detail. Selection of feasible structural/material designs are finally considered. Part II, ''Advanced Design and Analysis'' (Final Report) provides a basis for estimating relative costs of various types of pressure vessel construction. Four designs are presented; single wall, total layered, prestressed concrete, and prestressed cast iron. Part III summarizes the activities of the research project on coal conversion pressure vessels conducted at the University of Kentucky.
