The differential elastic cross sections for /sup 12/C + /sup 12/C and /sup 12/C + /sup 90/Zr were measured at 15 MeV/AMU, 25 MeV/AMU, and 35 MeV/AMU. The differential cross sections were then fit with standard models to determine the total reaction cross sections at these energies. At energies below 15 MeV/AMU the total reaction cross section is geometric. We found neither system could be described by a simple geometric model for these three energies. The total reaction cross sections were compared with calculations made using the optical limit of Glauber theory. These calculations predicted that the total reaction cross section should decrease with increasing energy for the carbon carbon system and should remain constant for the carbon zirconium system. This corresponds to an increase in transparency of about twelve percent over this energy range for both systems. The Glauber model predictions were found to be quite accurate for the carbon carbon system but were completely inconsistent with data for the carbon zirconium system. The predicted values for the total reaction cross section were found to be too small at the low energy and too large at the high energy. The increase in transparency in the carbon zirconium system was twice that of the carbon carbon system.
